The Fabricated Geomembrane Institute (FGI) will present a webinar, “Behavior of Textured Geomembrane–Nonwoven Geotextile Interfaces,” on Jan. 13, 2022, beginning at noon CST. The webinar is free for industry professionals and students, and 1 professional development hour (PDH) is available.

The webinar will provide insight into the post-peak strength loss for textured geomembrane/nonwoven geotextile and drainage geocomposite interfaces. The presenters will discuss direct shear and ring shear test results, which were conducted with and without one of the two interface materials being replaced to assess importance of geomembrane wear and geotextile combing. The results are used to present interface strength recommendations for static and seismic stability analyses and corresponding factors of safety.

Timothy Stark is a professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  Stark has been conducting interdisciplinary research on geosynthetics and, in particular, on geomembranes, for the last 25 years. This includes his research on the installation and long-term durability of geomembranes and other geosynthetics in geo-environmental and seepage applications. He is the technical director of FGI, which is an industry-sponsored research organization investigating the advantages and disadvantages of geomembranes for containment and seepage applications.

Robert H. Swan is a teaching professor and associate department head for undergraduate civil engineering studies in the Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering at Drexel University. Swan is a leading expert on geosynthetic interface testing, and he helped draft the initial ASTM International test methods for geosynthetic and geosynthetic clay liner interface testing. After completing his master’s degree at Drexel University, he started a soil-geosynthetics interaction testing laboratory for Geosyntec Consultants (Geosyntec) in Atlanta, Ga. In 2001 he purchased the assets of this laboratory from Geosyntec and created SGI Testing Services LLC with Dr. Zehong Yuan, Ph.D., P.E. After many years running SGI, Swan returned to Drexel University and continues to work on geosynthetic interface testing.
